Chapter 2 - The Kokiri Forest: Comforting Word's of a Friend

The Kokiri Village lay deep within the Kokiri Forest, built in a small, sunken clearing near the center. The raised, earth walls surrounding it kept it separate from the rest of the forest, leaving only one exit west of the village that led to the world outside, but the children of the forest never left, so it was never used.
The Kokiri village was a beautiful and lustrous place, and even though the population of the Kokiri Children was very small, the place was teeming with life. Every house in the Kokiri Village, like Link's house, was formerly a giant tree and was now a hollowed out trunk. The emerald grass draped over the earth and a vast variety of vibrant and exotic plant life grew from every corner of the village - not a single leaf ever withered or died. The sound of the trickling water filled the clearing with its charming melody. Bright blue and crystal clear, the water flowed down from the upper level of the clearing and made a small pond in the east part of the village. A bridge arced over it connecting it to the eastern path which led to the Great Deku Tree. Link's house was taller than the others, with its entrance higher up on a small balcony. The small, wooden door opened and out stepped Link, with Navi hovering close behind him. As the early, rising sun shone into the clearing and hit Link with a warm glow, he stretched and exhaled happily as he and Navi looked below at the stunningly beautiful Kokiri Village. Though it was early, the majority of the Kokiri were already outside. Some of them were working, pulling out rocks from the ground and tending to crops, while others were carefree, be it sitting and fishing along the edge of the small lake, or simply running and playing merrily amongst each other around their home.
"You seem quite happy, Link," Navi commented, hovering in front of Link to talk to him.
"Of course I am!" said Link with a tone of excitement in his voice. "All this time I've lived in the Kokiri Forest and I've never had a fairy of my own while everyone else did. Now I have one! Maybe people will accept me more for it now. Hehe, I can't wait to tell Saria about this."
"Saria… she's the girl who hangs around with you a lot, isn't she?"
"Yeah, she's really nice. Saria is the only Kokiri in this whole village that hangs around with me. She never makes fun of me because I didn't have a fairy and she would scold other people who did."
Link climbed down the ladder to the ground level of the village and Navi soared down after him.
"So tell me, why did the Deku Tree summon me?"
"I don't really have time to explain it. The Deku Tree will explain everything as soon as you meet him, but we must hurry - there's not much time. Follow me."
Navi shot forward quickly and Link raced after her. Navi headed east of the village to the path that led to the Deku Tree. As they crossed the bridge over the pond, they noticed someone standing in front of the entrance to the Deku Tree's clearing. As soon as he came into focus, Link gave an irritated 'Ugh' as Mido, the 'village chief', was blocking the entrance.
"Hey, look who it is! It's Mr. No-Fairy!" said Mido in a childish and boastful voice. "What do think you're doing? How many times do you need to be told? A fairy-less nobody like you doesn't deserve to go see the Great Deku Tree!"
Link then had a smug look on his face as he pointed at Navi without a word. Mido choked on the spot as he glared fixedly at Navi.
     "E-EH?! You… you have… a fairy?"
"Yup!" said Link cheerfully, unable to stop smiling.
"I…t-that doesn't matter! I'm the village chief and I still won't let you through!"
"Let us through Mido!" ordered Navi. "The Deku Tree has summoned Link and he needs to see him right away."
"W-WHAT?! You were summoned by the Great Deku Tree?!"
"Yup!" repeated Link, with an even bigger grin across his face.
"This is outrageous!" barked Mido. "Why would he summon you and not the great Mido? I'll never accept you as one of us!"
"We don't have much time!" shouted Navi. "Get out of the way!"
"He probably just caught you somewhere in the forest and forced you to be his servant! There's no way a fairy would ever come to you of its own free will, even a fairy as dumb as that one!"
"Hey, don't talk about Navi like that! I oughta beat you up for that!"
"Heh! Just try it! I'll mop you up like I've done all the other times you've tried to fight me."
"Link, we don't have-" but before Navi could finish, Link had already lunged at Mido and tackled him to the floor. Navi gave a fed up sigh as she and Mido's fairy watched from above as they scuffled on the floor.
"Oh dear, not this routine again…" said a girl's voice approaching from the bridge. She had short, lustrous green hair and bright blue eyes and, like all the Kokiri, was dressed in a green garb.
"Honestly, it seems that not a day goes by you two don't aimlessly fight like this."
Both Mido and Link stopped fighting abruptly and looked up to the girl who was standing over them, a pleasant but slightly aggravated smile on her face.
"S-Saria!" both of them shouted, quickly scrambling off the floor and standing up straight in a split second.
"Honestly," Saria sighed. "So what pointless argument are you two brawling over today? Who could kill more skulltulas than the other?"
"I need to go see the Deku Tree but Mido won't let us past," explained Link. "Could you please knock some sense into his fat head?"
"What'd you say?!" barked Mido. "The only reason my heads big is because my brain's bigger than your pea sized brain!"
"My fist is bigger than your brain, fat head Mido!" said Link, brandishing his fist.
     "Anything's bigger than yours!"
"KNOCK IT OFF!!!" screamed Saria, which made both Link and Mido yelp and cease shouting at each other, frightened to say anything else. Navi could be heard giggling to herself quietly in the background.
"Right… Mido, if Link wants to see the Deku Tree, then you have no right to stop him. Let him pass."
     "B-but," Mido stuttered.
"Now!" ordered Saria, pointing behind her towards the bridge indicating where she wanted him to go. Mido gave one last scrutinizing look to Links bright and beaming face, and slowly trudged towards the bridge.
"Shoot! How did he get to be the favorite of the Great Deku Tree and Saria, huh?!" Mido grumbled to himself as he disappeared over the bridge.
"Hehehe, thanks Saria! I really didn't think he would move his fat head out of the entrance," chuckled Link. Saria walked up to him and gave him a small but sharp tap on his head with the back of her fist.
"O-Ow! What was that for?!" said Link, rubbing the lump on his head.
"Honestly… you're such an idiot Link," said Saria, but, much to Link's surprise, she began giggling to herself. "You and Mido can never come to an agreement with anything. You two have fought hundreds of times in the past and no matter what it was about, it always ended up with you two tussling like little kids."
"It's his own fault! He shouldn't be so mean to me and everyone else!" said Link. He noticed that Saria had a surprised look on her face.
"Link, is that…?" said Saria, pointing at the fairy hovering above Link's head.
"Oh! I totally forgot! This fairy came to me this morning! I finally have one! Can you believe it?"
"Oh Link, that's fantastic! I told you a fairy would come to you one day! Im so happy for you!" said Saria with excitement. Link chuckled happily.
     "Her name is Navi."
"I-It's nice to meet you!" Navi said bashfully, smiling majestically at Saria.
"You too!" said Saria, smiling back at her.
"Navi, is it okay if I can talk to Saria for a little bit? I won't be long."
"…A few minutes, then we must go."
     "Thanks, Navi."

                                             *     *     *

Saria and Link sat on a large rock sticking out of the ground near the entrance to the Deku Tree. Navi and Saria's fairy hovered closely over them in their own little conversation.
"I'm so glad you finally have a fairy, Link! I knew you were a true Kokiri!"
"Yeah, I'm glad as well. Except… I honestly thought Mido would at least accept me even a little bit," said Link with a sad look on his face. "I still feel like I don't belong in this forest. Even if I do have a fairy, I feel like I can't be a true Kokiri if no one accepts me…"
"Link, that's not true. All these years that you haven't had a fairy, I've still accepted you. It doesn't matter whether you have a fairy or not, you're still my best friend, Link, okay?" said Saria, giving Link a warming smile.
"…Of course," said Link, smiling back. "Thanks, Saria."
"No problem!" said Saria, putting a comforting arm on his shoulder.
"Oh, yeah - I had that dream again last night."
"Oh, you mean the one with the big field and those black clouds?"
"Yeah, and there was that huge building with a pointy roof again."
"Hmm, that might be a castle."
     "A castle? What's that?"
"The Deku Tree said it was a kind of building that exists outside the forest."
"That's so strange, though. How could I be dreaming of things I've never seen before?"
Saria and Link watched the low morning sun rise high above the horizon from the top of the forest.
"The Great Deku Tree has taught all us Kokiri that other people exist far, far away outside the Kokiri Forest and beyond the plains," said Saria. "It has been said that the outside world is a very big and mysterious place, and there are many lands in it. However, it is a shame that none of us could ever go outside these forests and see the rest of the world with our own eyes. If a Kokiri leaves the forest, then he or she will die."
"Yeah… I wish I could see the world outside. I bet it's a really amazing place."
"So, why do you have to see the Great Deku Tree?"
"Navi woke me up this morning to tell me that he had summoned me. I didn't believe that he did at first, but Navi is really serious about it."
"Wow! He really summoned you? It's quite an honor to talk to the Great Deku Tree. Do you know why he wants to talk to you?"
"Not yet, but Navi said he'd explain everything to me when I see him."
"Hmm, I wonder what it's about = it's quite rare that he will summon a Kokiri Child. Well, I shouldn't really keep you waiting. I'll let you go see him. I'll wait for you here until you're done!"
"Okay. I'll see you in a bit, Saria!"
"Yep! I hope he has good news for you, Link," Saria finished, but thought differently when she saw a troubled look on Navi's face, making her wonder if Link would be okay. Link gave one last wave to Saria as he and Navi set off into the deepest part of the Kokiri Forest, an unknowing feeling deep in his gut that told him that whatever was lying in wait for him was going to be far from good news.

End of Chapter 2
Hey guys~! ^_^ Here's the continuation of my Ocarina of Time novel and this is Chapter 2 which is titled "The Kokiri Forest: Comforting words of a Friend" which introduces the characters Saria and Mido, and shows Link's relationship between both of them.

I loved writing this chapter because I loved the friendship between Saria and Link in the game and I really wanted to expand that a bit more :3 and I love how his relationship with Mido is the exact opposite of Saria's xDDD Fans might notice that Link didn't get his sword or shield yet like he did in the game. This'll make sense in the next chapter as I don't want to write too much on what fans already know from what happens in the game :)

Please feel free to post comments as I am dying to know what you all think of my OoT Story ^_^ and of course I openly accept any criticism you have as it could help to improve my style of storytelling. Thank you~! :3

Are you writing up the entire story of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time?.
If you are, i'll be sure to read the entire story from finish to end. It is my favorite game, and i would love a whole edition of the entire game put into a story. :)
